The manufacturing industry currently faces a variety of much-discussed challenges: a labor shortage, a looming “Silver tsunami” of potential retirements, and long-term succession concerns. At Moseys Production Machinists, we’ve confronted and addressed many of these issues over the past several years to make us a reliable machine shop, but one powerful solution we haven’t highlighted is our digital ERP system.
Our ERP allows us to capture real-time data in every phase of our projects. That transparency helps enable continuous improvement, retain tribal knowledge, and eliminate succession concerns at our precision machine shop. It’s a big reason we’ve achieved 100% on-time delivery (OTD) with several key customers over the past year.
Learn 3 ways our digital ERP system makes us a more reliable machine shop and helps us deliver the best possible results for our customers— now and into the future.
1. Tracking at the Source of Work for Faster Machining
Our digital ERP captures data from receipt of the PO all the way through shipping, including insights directly at the source of work. That means our team can identify production improvements in real time during their precision CNC machining, quickly implementing changes and measuring results. When a machinist finds a more efficient way to run a job, from reduced cycle times to better fixturing, we make that the new standard and document it in our ERP.
These efforts in continuous improvement not only lead to better parts and higher throughput in our production machining services, but also higher engagement from our team. Our machinists are invested in the system, giving feedback and suggesting process changes, always trying to improve with each iteration.
2. Preserving Tribal Knowledge for a Long-Term Partnership
We’ve always prioritized building a resilient shop that doesn’t depend on any single person. Our ERP has been a major asset in these efforts, helping to preserve tribal knowledge and reduce the risk of lost information that could affect our precision machining services.
Every job in our system is fully traceable. Customers can communicate with us 5 years after a project, and we can instantly tell them who ran their job, what tools we used, what inspection equipment was used, what the results of the inspection were, and more.
Even more critically for repeatability, we can see how our approach to that job evolved over time and the improvements we implemented during every run. If that customer wants to run the same part, our documentation enables us to quickly pick up exactly where we left off, even if key staff involved in the last project have moved on.
3. Hitting Delivery Targets by Focusing on the Right Tasks
Our digital ERP has played a key role in helping us hit 100% OTD with several large customers, cementing our status as a trusted partner and a reliable machine shop. And it may be counterintuitive, but that’s partly because we’re not fixated on the due date.
It’s easy to fixate on a deadline months away for delivery of precision machined components—that alone tells you little about your current likelihood of meeting it. Instead, we leverage our ERP to break every job into small, actionable steps and track each milestone individually. When each stage runs on time, the overall job stays on track naturally.
It’s an important lesson in manufacturing and in life: to reach your big goal, stay focused on your next small step.
