In the manufacturing world, engineering revisions are a fact of life. In addition to our core production work, we also handle prototype-to-production projects at Moseys Production Machinists, so design updates are often expected. And that’s rarely a problem as long as everyone is aligned from the start.
But unexpected revisions that arrive late in the manufacturing process can add both cost and lead time. We can adjust to those changes, but we always want customers to understand the reasons for the potential effects on their bottom line.
When Revisions Can Be Straightforward
Above all, the best time to discuss potential revisions is before the project actually begins. At Moseys, if we know a part is still moving through prototype development before reaching production at our shop, we will plan accordingly. We may take a more flexible manufacturing approach and avoid overinvesting in dedicated fixtures too early.
In high-volume production work, revisions can also be manageable when they happen before you issue your purchase order. At that point, we can still update the quote and adjust our strategy before we’ve committed to certain purchases.
Why Mid-Project Revisions Can Add Cost
Once a purchase order is placed with our precision machine shop and a project begins to move forward, the situation changes. At that stage, we may already be committed to steps like purchasing material or programming the job, and the time and money invested cannot be fully recovered.
Not every revision creates the same level of disruption. Small revisions, like a minor feature adjustment or a small dimensional change, could be simple to incorporate. But a large revision that requires a new manufacturing strategy can have consequences.
Workholding, for instance, can be one of the biggest considerations in revisions. For a new part, we need to determine how it will be held for efficient machining, which can require programming, planning, and workholding design before the first part is cut. If a major revision makes the workholding and programming unusable, it can lead to added costs and schedule delays.
That does not mean revisions cannot happen even at that point in the process; just that late-stage revisions can carry real consequences. It’s always best to discuss with us as early as possible.
A Case Study in Successful Revision Changes
One recent customer provided a strong example of how revisions can be handled well. From the time they submitted their RFQ, they were clear that the part was still in the prototype phase of their prototype-to-production process with us, and revisions were very likely.
Because we knew that upfront, we planned our work differently. Instead of investing in elaborate production fixtures that could potentially be unhelpful one day, we took a more flexible approach.
The customer has been able to make several revisions without causing major changes to the project cost. And once they’re ready to scale, we can invest in the right workholding. Good fixtures can dramatically improve production efficiency in our production machining services, but those benefits can be undermined if the fixture has to be redesigned several times before the part is finalized.
