    • Maintain very sharp PVD-coated tools (the advantage of which is ensuring you make smooth cuts and zero mistakes in the base material)

Stainless Steel Machining Tips

Some stainless steel alloys are prone to harden during machining which can cause overheating and increased work hardening. 

To avoid these complications, follow these two tips:

  • Ensure tool overhang is minimum and that tooling and workpieces are secure
  • Start with lower feed rates (since stainless steel quality can vary between suppliers and batches) as high feed rates can cause heat transfer into the cutting tool, accelerating tool wear

Titanium Machining Tips

Tips for machining titanium include pre-drilling threading to reduce torque levels and tool strain, increasing flute quantity for increased productivity, and keeping a low radial engagement rate to maximize heat dissipation. 

Inconel Machining Tips

Inconel metal is exceptionally tough making them valuable as high-intensity applications but also incredibly difficult to work with. 

Often requiring extreme temperatures, Inconel machining can be simplified through these three tips: 

  • Make sure to regularly check toolings for signs of wear as the surface hardness of Inconel can blunt even the strongest tools
  • Start with a solutionized piece of Inconel to limit the amount of work hardening and reduce wear and tear
  • Use ceramic cutting tools to make continuous cuts and minimize work hardening
