Why Include a 3D Model with Your Quote Request?

At any modern machine shop, you’ll find advanced manufacturing software that requires a 3D solid model file to produce error-free parts with maximum efficiency.

Moseys operates no differently. A part’s solid model is necessary for performing precision machining services and delivering exceptional parts. Yet, when ordering parts, many of our customers initially send us only their part’s blueprint. This 2D drawing is important, but it’s not sufficient on its own. Here’s why:

Why 3D Models are Essential in Modern Manufacturing

  • Your part’s blueprint provides essential notes, specifications, materials, and tolerances that complement the 3D model.
  • Your part’s 3D CAD model is a 360-degree digital object that we leverage to design fixturing and workholding, test-fit assembly components, and ultimately achieve your specifications with superior accuracy and precision.

To deliver optimum results, we need the full picture of your part. Without a solid model, that picture is incomplete.

3D models impact quoting and planning

Your 3D model plays a pivotal role right from the quoting stage. Our cutting-edge quoting software, tailored to our shop’s capabilities, analyzes your model to determine the necessary processes, identify design challenges, and formulate an accurate quote.

3D models enable CNC programming and verification

For CNC machining and custom workholding or fixturing, the 3D model is indispensable. Without it, we can’t program our CNC machines or run the necessary verification software—two critical steps in manufacturing, whether you need one part or complete production machining services.

3D models ensure a superior experience

Providing a 3D model ensures you retain total control over the final product. You’ll also benefit from shorter lead times and reduced costs, making your Moseys experience efficient and satisfactory.

Why Your 3D Model Should Always Come from You

Surprisingly, about 50% of our customers don’t supply a 3D model—even after we request one—yet the vast majority of contemporary designs do have a 3D model. Without your solid model, our team has no choice but to recreate it from scratch.

While Moseys is adept at designing and drawing in SolidWorks, we’re not the experts on your part; you are. Our expertise is bringing your design to life with superior precision machining services.

If we create your part’s missing solid model, we may be forced to make assumptions regarding key aspects of your p

art, and we prefer never to make assumptions about any part’s geometric dimensioning requirements.

Our California machine shop certainly cannot make assumptions about parts destined for aerospace or medical applications, for example, which are subject to stringent industry regulations.

Therefore, the 3D model really needs to come from you.
