Production Machining Overview: What is Machining Production?

Computer numerical control (CNC) machining is a form of subtractive manufacturing. Subtractive manufacturing is a process involving the shaping of raw materials into specific components through cutting, drilling, milling, and other removal methods. The subtractive manufacturing process is used to fashion parts out of a diverse assortment of materials, including plastics, metals, alloys, wood, and composites. Additive manufacturing processes, on the other hand, involve the molding, layering, and assembly of materials through formative manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing.

CNC machining parts are often designed using computer-aided design software and technology. This gives designers the ability to visualize the full dimensions and specifications of the component design and assess the capability of the CNC machining equipment to produce the desired product.

The CNC machining process involves the utilization of automated, computer-guided machine tools and controls to achieve extremely tight tolerances and highly complex geometries for the components being fabricated. CNC machining services are capable of automating several stages, including:

  • Computer-aided design (CAD) model development
  • CAD model file conversion, utilizing CAM, to a CNC program
  • CNC machine preparation
  • Execution of the machining process

CNC precision machining is used to fabricate parts and components for numerous industries, including aerospace, agricultural, automotive, energy, food processing, hydraulics, manufacturing, and many more.

The most commonly used CNC machining mechanical operations are drilling, milling, turning, boring, threading, and grooving.

CNC Production Machining – What Does It Include?

CNC Drilling Services

  • Use multi-point rotating drill bits
  • Create cylindrical openings and holes in materials
  • Are characterized by the perpendicular or angled feed into materials

CNC Milling Services

  • Use multi-point rotating cutting tools
  • Achieve a wide variety of shapes and geometries
  • Are characterized by the removal of materials from workpieces

CNC Turning Services

  • Use single-point cutting tools
  • Feed the cutting tool along the workpiece surface
  • Rotate materials to achieve round and/or cylindrical results

What is a CNC Production Machinist?

CNC machinists are highly skilled technicians responsible for programming the precision machining equipment, executing quality control protocols, repairing mechanical problems and troubleshooting, and managing teams of CNC operators.
