What Is Production
Machining?
Production machining is the capability to output large production runs using
a variety of machining services. At MPM, our production machining services
include milling, turning, CNC machining, and Swiss machining (more details
in its own section.)
Milling machines
are very versatile devices capable
of many machining operations. The milling
machine rotates the cutter but keeps
it fixed in space while the piece part
is moved into the rotating cutter.
Turning is performed on a lathe. The
lathe is used to perform several operations
almost all of which involve the rotation
of the piece part. CNC machines are
fast, repeatable and programmable.
Machines are typically automated and
unattended making it possible to manufacture
complex and simple parts efficiently.
MPM currently have 10 mills, 7 lathes,
and 1 FMS machines to handle mill parts
up to 20” x 40” x 22” and
lathe parts from .050” diameter
to 15” in diameter.
Our production
runs are anywhere between 20 pieces
per lot to 500 pieces per lot, depending
on our customers’ needs. It is
not the size of the lot we are looking
for in production work, but the repeatability
of the product line.
